Friday’s Robertson girls’ basketball win over Ruidoso felt a lot like a save situation in baseball.
Instead of one closer, however, the Lady Cardinals brought five.
A team effort downed the visiting Lady Warriors in a 73-65 final tally at Mike Marr Gym.
The game was generally closer than that score would indicate. Ruidoso had cut the margin to 59-57 halfway through the fourth quarter, and the Lady Cardinals were in a dry spell, held without a field goal through the first 4:34 of the period.
But on a pass from Kendra Montoya, Miranda Segura slashed to the bucket for a score and drew a foul. Segura’s free throw extended Robertson’s edge to 62-57 with 3:26 to go.
Neither side scored for the next minute, until Abbey Bradley swished a clutch three-pointer from the right wing to make it 65-57.
Chaylene Sena, who’d made a number of nice plays reflected in the stat sheet and otherwise, was next to step up for the Lady Cards. Her basket made it a 10-point margin.
Ruidoso finally ended its own drought with a pair of Daisy Cuevas free throws at the 2:04 mark.
But Montoya and Bradley both scored to regain the 10-point spread, and it was Heather Aragon who made two clinching free throws with 22 seconds remaining.
Bradley tallied 20 points to lead all players. Montoya (15), Heather Aragon (13), Sena (10), Santana Aragon (6), Amber Yara (6) and Segura (3) helped in the scoring column.
Yara and Heather Aragon punctuated the second and third periods by hitting three-pointers.
Madigan Gonzales, Ruidoso’s 5-11 senior forward, scored 19 to lead the visitors.
