Robertson girls’ tennis team nabbed the No. 2 seed in this coming weekend’s district tournament by virtue of their performance in the pre-district event over the weekend in Santa Fe.

Meanwhile the Robertson boys’ team finished third in the pre-district competition.

Coach Randy Garcia's Lady Cardinals lost 5-1 to St. Michael’s in the championship, averting a shutout with Juliana Guerin’s 6-1, 7-6 sweep of Paloma Gomez at No. 1 singles.

Notably, the Lady Cards played without usual No. 2 Miranda Garcia, moving other players up in the lineup. In descending order, Victoria Gomez, Victoria Urrutia, Giavanna LaFerriere, Dominique Rivera and Elise Almendera represented RHS in the girls’ No. 2 through No. 6 singles slots. The shuffled doubles pairings were Guerin and Gomez, Urrutia and LaFerriere, and Almendera and Rivera.

The Lady Cardinals finished ahead of third-place Santa Fe Prep and fourth-place Raton.

On the boys’ side, Robertson finished third behind St. Mike’s and Santa Fe Prep, beating Raton 5-1 in the third-place match.

In that dual, Lucas Vigil, Nick Newman and Kenny Arguello manned the top three singles’ positions and swept the Tigers, only dropping one set combined. In doubles, Emilio Gomez and David Romero won in straight sets, as did Vigil and Marcus Alcaraz. Newman and Charlie Linder defaulted in No. 3 doubles.

Coach Juan Carlos Fulgenzi’s Cardinals lost 5-4 to Prep in the semifinals, with Gomez, Romero and Vigil winning singles matches and the Gomez-Romero duo prevailing at No. 1 doubles.
