The state Supreme Court made history Thursday with its ruling that same-sex couples have a right to enter into civil marriages.
With the issuance of that opinion, New Mexico became the 17th state in the nation to allow gay marriage.
We applaud the justices for seeing through the razor-thin arguments proffered by opponents of same-sex unions, mainly that allowing them would somehow weaken the institution of marriage and that they shouldn’t be allowed because such unions can’t produce children.
