Derek Crenshaw and Jacob Rodgers each went 4 for 5 with three runs batted in apiece to stake Eastern New Mexico to a 13-5 win in Sunday’s series finale at New Mexico Highlands’ Brandt Park.
The usually sharp-hitting Cowboys were limited to six hits over nine innings, while the visiting Greyhounds notched 21.
Highlands was trailing 7-0 when it got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Chavez and Jordan Goliat each scored on wild pitches, and Kyle Davis made it home on a balk, cutting the gap to 7-3.
But Eastern made up those runs with a three-score sixth. And Rogers smacked a two-run homer in the eighth in another three-run frame.
In picking up the win, ENMU pitcher Jaspreet Shergill held Highlands to two runs on four hits over the last four innings.
Braulio Hernandez was tagged with the loss for the Cowboys.
It was a quiet end to the season-opening series for NMHU, particularly for the trio of Goliat, Davis and Josh McMahon, who’d had starring roles in Friday’s wild 22-16 win.
Goliat finished the weekend 8 for 14 at the plate with three RBI. Davis was 6 of 14 with six RBI. And McMahon was 6 for 11 with four RBI.
The Hounds are 7-1 two series into the season; NMHU is 1-3.
