Chavez, Ohoueu set pace as Highlands teams sweep the Jam

By Dave Kavanaugh

Highlands senior Henrique Chavez trailed South Plains College’s Jose Martinez through the first mile or two of Saturday’s NMHU XC Jam, but the Mora standout was just biding his time, pacing himself for the push to come.

Then, about midway through the 8-kilometer race, Chavez made his move. Stride by stride, he outkicked Martinez and took a narrow lead. The lead grew down the stretch, and by the time Chavez crossed the finish line — in a time of 24:47 — he was more than a half minute in front of Martinez, who’d bested him just two weeks earlier in Goodwell, Okla.

Chavez’s time, reported NMHU head coach Bob DeVries, was his fastest yet for an 8K race and the first sub-25-minute 8K of his career.

“This was a good team run,” DeVries said. Five of the top six runners, and eight of the top 15, wore NMHU purple.

On the heels of his first win as a collegian, Alonzo Chavez (Henrique’s younger brother and a Highlands freshman) pushed hard to place third with a time of 25:27, just five ticks behind Martinez. A pack of Cowboy teammates followed in close succession — Jesus Mendoza (25:32), Caleb Rubalcaba (25:33) and Stephen Carbajal (25:49).

Earlier, in the women’s 5K run, Highlands’ Marie-Josiane Ohoueu captured her first individual championship with a personal best 18:32. Ohoueu has led the Cowgirls in each race this season.

Five Cowgirls finished among the top 10, securing a team championship in the lone home meet of the season. Several achieved personal record times.

“These ladies are really starting to believe in themselves and each other. I am proud of how each of them stepped up and raced hard, “ said DeVries.

Next up for the Highlands runners is the Chile Pepper Festival, one of the bigger races in the country, this coming Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
