Oscar Almeida struck out the last two batters, stranding Adams State’s potential tying run on second base, and the Highlands Cowboys edged Adams State 7-6 on Sunday in their series finale at Brandt Park.

The win for pitcher Chris Prokupek (and save for Almeida) completed a four-game sweep.

The Cowboys (7-5 overall, 4-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) are on a five-game win streak after having lost four of their first five games. And head coach Steve Jones is just four wins shy of the 500-victory career milestone.

Adams State, in its first full season of baseball after a hiatus dating to 1976, fell to 1-12, 0-4.

Matt Gualco led the Cowboys, hitting 4 of 5 with three runs batted in and two scored. Kyle Davis and Jordan Falcon had three hits apiece.

Highlands led 7-2 through the first four innings. The Grizzlies rallied with two runs in the top of the fifth and then two more in the ninth before Almeida stuffed the rally and picked up his second save.
