A number of New Mexico Highlands University student athletes in the school’s winter and spring sports are among the league honorees for academic performance this year.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has released the names of the student athletes who have been named to the Academic All-RMAC teams and Honor Roll in softball and baseball. To qualify, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.3 or better, be a starter or reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. Graduate students must have earned a 3.3 in their undergrad and graduate classes. The listed GPA is what the student-athletes had earned prior to softball season beginning. RMAC Sports Information Directors at schools that sponsor the sports selected First and Second Team Academic All-RMAC.
Bringing in the top honors for the Cowboys is senior second baseman David Bustillos from Las Cruces, posting a 3.6 GPA and majoring in business administration and finance. Bustillos was chosen as a unanimous first team selection, a feat only three other players earned.
Trent Evins, a junior pitcher from LaGrande, Ore., also earned first team honors. He is working toward a degree in exercise science and has a 3.6 GPA.
The lone Cowboy on the second team Academic All-RMAC team is Danny Brown. Brown is a senior from Chehalis, Wash., majoring in media arts. His GPA is 3.3.
Seniors Tyler Wichmann and Robert Vasquez both earned spots on the Honor Roll. Wichmann is majoring in business administration and has earned a 3.4 GPA. Vasquez is majoring in criminal justice and has a 3.3 GPA.
Over on the Cowgirl softball team Andin Anderson and Martina Chavez both garnered second team honors. Anderson is majoring in exercise science and currently boasts a 3.8 GPA. Chavez is majoring in elementary education and carries a 4.0 GPA.
Teammates Diana Garcia, Ashley Paiz and Natasha Reyes were all named to the All-Academic Honor Roll for their achievements in the classroom. Garcia is majoring in special education and has a 3.7 GPA. Paiz is working toward a degree in media arts and carries a 3.4 GPA. Reyes is majoring in chemistry and biology and boasts a 3.5 GPA.
