Authorities retrieved a loaded handgun from the vehicle of the suspect involved in Monday’s police standoff near the Abelino Montoya Recreation Center on north Grand Avenue.

The suspect, Roger S. Romero, 29, of Chacon, was taken into custody Monday night after Las Vegas police subdued him with pepper balls and bean bag rounds. His sports utility vehicle was sealed and hauled away by a tow truck until officers could get a search warrant.

Officers obtained that search warrant and they executed it Tuesday. Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño confirmed that a loaded handgun was found in the SUV.

Prior to the standoff, Romero wrecked into a light pole and then into another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle alleges that Romero pointed a handgun at him before fleeing the scene. Romero is being held at the San Miguel County Detention Center in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.

“This case is particularly troublesome to me in that several citizens, fire fighters and police officers were put in harm’s way,” Montaño said. “I give a lot of credit to my officers involved for showing sound judgment and patience in what could have potentially been an officer-involved shooting.”
