Unable to capitalize on the feel-good vibe from the previous week’s thrilling homecoming victory, the New Mexico Highlands football team stumbled to a 55-0 defeat Saturday at Adams State in Alamosa, Colo.
Terjean Saffold scored four touchdowns — three on the ground and one through the air — for the Grizzlies (2-4, 1-3).
The Cowboys (1-5, 1-3) were held to 110 offensive yards; Jordan Mendoza went 14 of 26 for 84 yards and three interceptions. Kevon Williams caught five passes but was contained to 14 yards.
Saffold, who’d go on to 113 total rush yards, scored twice in the first quarter on runs from 1 and 5 yards out.
Thomas Brown and Saffold ran for TDs and Sean McDougal passed one — a 25-yarder to Scott Kellogg — as the Grizzlies took a 34-0 halftime lead.
Tony Udley and Anthony Yarbrough were in on nine tackles apiece for the Cowboys, who host Chadron State on Saturday.
