Kyle Gutchewsky homered and his New Mexico Highlands teammates David Bustillos, Oscar Sigala and Troy DeAngelis each collected two hits in Friday’s 8-3 win over Mesa State College.
But the man on the mound — Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason Pitcher of the year Drew Vassil — really shined, going the distance in a nine-inning win, striking out five and allowing seven hits and no earned runs.

Mesa, the preseason favorite to win the league title, bounced back on Saturday with a 21-4 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. But the Cowboys answered right back with an 18-4 triumph.
Highlands (11-2) and Mesa (5-6) were to play again Sunday at Brandt Park. They’ll meet again in late April on Mesa’s Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colo.
NMHU plays Colorado State-Pueblo on Tuesday.
