A 3-year-old Las Vegas girl was killed Wednesday in a two-car collision on Interstate 25 between Pecos and Santa Fe.
Raquel Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene after the car her mother was driving hit another car and rolled over several times, state police said. The girl was reportedly thrown from the vehicle during the rollovers.
According to a state police news release, the accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. near Mile Marker 299. The girl’s mother, Marsela Garcia, 20, also of Las Vegas, was northbound on I-25 in a 2002 Chevrolet when she apparently left her lane and traveled into the path of another northbound car, a 2008 Kia driven by Tim Lopez, 48, of Pecos.
The two cars hit and the Kia spun out of control coming to a rest in the median. Marsela’s vehicle also spun out of control and rolled several times, the release stated.
“During the rolling momentum, Raquel Garcia was ejected,” state police reported in the release.
Police said failure to properly secure the child restraint was a contributing factor in her death. Alcohol was not listed as a contributing factor in the crash, according to the report.
