Fiesta run draws nearly 300

-A A +A
By Dave Kavanaugh

One participant in Friday morning’s Fiesta run served up the ultimate compliment to the event as he took a moment to catch his breath upon completing the course.

“This is Olympic caliber competition here today,” he marveled before turning back to encourage fellow runners still heading south on Hot Springs Boulevard toward the finish line on the edge of the Old Town Plaza.

He wasn’t exaggerating.

Among the participants was Victoria Martinez, a Robertson alumnus who finished a respectable 17th in the women’s 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials just a couple weeks prior. Martinez, who helped Adams State College to national titles in cross country while earning All-American acclaim, was the top female finisher in Friday’s 5-kilometer run.

The only runner ahead of her in that race was West Las Vegas’ own Daniel Lopez, a multi-sport athlete who made strong state championship runs in cross country, basketball and track in 2007-08.

Breaking up the pack of 5K runners despite their lengthy head start was Laurent Ngirakamaro. The New Mexico Highlands University senior won the 10K run in seeming cruise control. New teammate Tony Sanchez — Lopez’s former cohort at West — trailed him after having won in 2007. Ngirakamaro, Sanchez and the rest of the Cowboys will look to return to the rarified air of NCAA Division II cross country this coming fall; NMHU finished 10th in last November’s national meet.

Joining them in the winner’s circle were Elicia Gallegos, 12, who repeated as champ in the children’s 1-mile run; and Theresa Aragon, 47, who won the 5K walk again.

“We had a pretty good turnout,” said Bob Read, one of the Fiesta run organizers and the father to its namesake, the late Pablo Read. He estimated 297 participants in the three races. At least that many spectators stood by along the course to cheer on their favorite athletes.

More so than any other athletic event in the Meadow City, the Fiesta run attracts a broad spectrum of participants. While the Las Vegas area was well-represented, runners and walkers came from California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and even Virginia to take part. Several sextuagenarians were in the fray. The oldest entrant, officially, was 74-year-old Ted Rogers, who ran a strong 55:14 in the 10K. The youngest was 2-year-old Mallory Raimondi in the kids’ 1-mile run.

The Fiesta run has been staged for more than a quarter century. In 1997, it took on the name of Pablo Read, a former high school and college runner who died in an automobile crash on Interstate 25.
