We have read your published letters from Carrol Pearson and Frank Splendoria about solitary confinement. Mr. Splendoria mentioned the recent murders in Aurora, Colo., by one James Holmes. These were probably far worse than the Columbine murders some years ago. These things certainly ought not to be.
But let’s not make extremes in thinking about killers. It’s as senseless to say “Put James Holmes in solitary, care less and let him rot,” as it is to say, “Give him all the goodies and send him to a psychologist because he had some bad breaks.”
