Brittany Gutierrez was named Elks Student of the Month for October. The West Las Vegas High School senior maintains a 4.1 GPA. She is the daughter of Frank and Isabel Gutierrez of Ribera, N.M.

Some of her hobbies and extracurricular activities include choir, mariachi, fishing, ranching, spending time with her family and riding horses.

She is a four-time all stater for choir, has been on the “A” honor roll throughout high school, two-time state champion for choir and a National Honor Society secretary.

Upon graduation she plans to attend New Mexico Highlands University for several years and transfer to the University of New Mexico for a degree in medicine.

Melecio Perea was named Elks Student of the Month for October. Perea, a student at West Las Vegas High School, has a 4.1 GPA. The son of Mike and Kathy Perea, he is a senior at West and plans to attend the University of New Mexico to obtain a degree in medicine.

At West, he is involved in band, Business Professionals of America, MESA, National Honor Society, Semillas de Salud and mariachi. He is also a member of the Highlands University jazz band.

Some of his scholastic awards include the “A” honor roll, third place winner of the New Mexico Bar state essay contest, Rotary Student of the Month and band drum major.
