Jay Quintana, who was fired as a Robertson High School teacher this week, has a prominent backer in the school district — his wife, Associate Superintendent LeeEtte Quintana, who is second in command.
Recently, LeeEtte Quintana has reportedly been circulating a petition in support of her husband, who has also served as golf coach.
Her immediate supervisor, Superintendent Rick Romero, made the decision to put Jay Quintana on paid leave earlier this year after allegations surfaced that the teacher had had sex with a student. And he also made the call to fire Jay Quintana.
Romero said he has spoken with employees of the district who were asked by the associate superintendent to sign the petition in favor of her husband. But he said those employees reported to him that they felt no obligation to add their signatures.
“We need to make sure we keep our personal affairs separate from our professional affairs,” Romero said. “I expect that when people are at work, they are there to fulfill their professional responsibilities.”
Romero said he didn’t know the exact circumstances in which LeeEtte Quintana asked people to sign the petition.
Romero said the petition wouldn’t have any bearing on his decisions related to Jay Quintana.
“I’ll weigh my decisions based on information that has been provided to the district through our investigator,” Romero said.
LeeEtte Quintana didn’t return two messages for comment.
At Tuesday’s regular school board meeting, Romero praised LeeEtte Quintana, whom he appointed to the position shortly after he took the helm last summer.
He said the associate superintendent was a highly qualified employee and someone who is not afraid to express her opinions to the boss. He said the two work well together.
