Robertson picked up bragging rights with wins over West Las Vegas in soccer and volleyball this past Thursday.

The RHS boys’ soccer team, a favorite to regain the district title, sailed to a 10-0 win at RHS Field.

Henry Robertson’s hat trick, including the Cardinals’ fourth goal and the first two of the second half, was just the latest highlight in a strong season for the RHS junior.

Also scoring for the Redbird kickers: Keen Martinez, Jalen Martinez, Justin Abreu, Isaac Hidalgo, Charlie Armijo and Aaron Padilla.

RHS  put three goals on the board in the first eight minutes, and after Robertson made it 4-0, coach Clarence Montoya gave his big attackers like Robertson and Keen Martinez an extended break. The home team led 6-0 at halftime.

WLV’s Jordan Chavez had several saves.

Later that evening, the Lady Cardinal volleyball team won a competitive four-game match with its town rivals.

RHS controlled game one for a 25-18 decision, then jumped to a 7-0 lead in game two. But the Lady Dons rallied, taking their first lead at 21-20 after a couple fine plays at the net by Vanessa Lucero. Jazmine Harge hit back-to-back kills to regain control for Robertson at 24-23, but Linda Esquibel’s strong finish lifted West to a 27-25 win.

The Lady Cards trailed just briefly before surging to leads of 10-3 and 16-6 in game three. Defensive lapses got things close at 17-14, but with Marka Garcia at the service line, RHS scored five in a row for a 23-15 advantage. A Brooke Knezevich kill and an errant Esquibel pass later, RHS won 25-16.

Game four was tight down the stretch; a Lucero ace tied it at 24 before kills by Knezevich and Harge put the match on ice.
