Just one stroke made the difference Monday as Robertson’s Lady Cardinal golf team stunned host St. Michael’s for the district championship.
With regular tournament play closing and Robertson and St. Mike’s tied with a 375 team score, a playoff was ordered at the Santa Fe course.
Continuing the strongest day of play to date, RHS delivered.
“It was nerve-racking,” said RHS coach Gene Gurule. “The girls stuck to their game plan and came out on top ... The girls did awesome.”
Jayme Quintana and Nina Martinez each shot a 92 to lead the way; Jamie Allen had a 93, Karlee Bradley a 98, and Shannon Lopez a 103.
Gurule said he was especially proud of the play of Martinez and Bradley, who picked an opportune time to shoot their best rounds of the year. And Allen had a good outing as well, he said, after returning from an injury sustained early in basketball season.
“I am so proud of all of them,” he said. “They held their composure very good that day and did not let the pressure get in their way. The girls wanted this badly and knew it would be a close one at the end.”
Quintana, Allen and Martinez were named to the all-district team.
The Lady Cardinals will travel to Socorro on Sunday morning to compete in the state competitions on Monday and Tuesday.
Gurule saluted and thanked sponsors Eagle's Lodge 3815, Dr. Edward Ebell, Jay Moore at New Mexico Land and Title, Rosemarie Montoya at State Farm, Gary Vaisa at Las Vegas Auto Sales, Denise Franken, Dr. Sanchez and Michael Gregory Jr.
