Surely the lawmakers who want to balance the budget know that you can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip. Surely they know that to make a stronger chain you strengthen the weaker links.  

We must not reduce the deficit on the backs of the poor and the elderly. We must not do away with Social Security, Medicaid and unemployment benefits.

You and I should join the clergy who are praying for lawmakers who want to do away with entitlements.
