With the St. Michael’s Horsemen out of the way, this year’s District 2 (1A-3A) wrestling tournament will be devoid of the red (Cardinals) vs. blue (Horsemen) finals that were plentiful for years.
Robertson, whose streak of state wrestling dominance fell at the hands of St. Mike’s last year, figures to be the favorite Saturday at Gillie Lopez Gym, host site for this year’s district tourney. Unbeaten Daniel Martinez leads a host of strong Cardinal wrestlers. Fellow RHS seniors are Charlie Armijo, Gabe Lovato, John Pino and Jeremy Valdez.
West Las Vegas and Tucumcari have strong grapplers in several weight classes and will mount a challenge — or at least make the battle for second and third interesting. Dons of note include Chris Lujan, Sal Lopez, Jayvis Medrano and Brandon Maddux. Patrick Wiegle leads the Rattlers.
Replacing St. Mike’s in the fray will be Taos, a school with some history as a wrestling power; Dakota Swinehart is one to watch at 189. And Pecos is not to be discounted, either, with guys like Brandon Velasquez, Cipriano Rodelas and John and Mathew Torrez in the mix.
State is Feb. 18-19 at Rio Rancho’s Santa Ana Star Center.
