More questions than answers remain in this week’s district basketball tournaments, but at least the final destinations are known.
Pojoaque Valley’s Brandon Bustos nailed a game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds Monday to lift the Elks to a 58-55 win over Taos in a single-game playoff to determine the District 2-3A boys’ regular-season champ and the top seed in this week’s tournament. The game was held at Gillie Lopez Gym, a neutral site.
West Las Vegas was to host Raton on Tuesday after this issue went to press; the winner of that game plays at Robertson at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mike Marr Gym. Wednesday’s winner plays at Taos on Thursday, and then that victor visits Pojoaque at 7 p.m. Saturday in the final.
On the girls’ side, Pojoaque on Wednesday evening will host the winner of Tuesday night’s game between host Robertson and West Las Vegas, who won at Raton 79-61 to advance. Taos, the regular-season champ, awaits Wednesday’s winner. That final is 7 p.m. Friday in Taos.
Over in District 2-2A, the Pecos Panthers are regular-season champs and will host the boys’ final at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Tuesday’s Mora-Monte del Sol winner and Peñasco-Santa Fe Prep winner will play Thursday to determine the other finalist.
Mora’s Rangerettes host the Friday night final. A semifinal 6:30 p.m. Wednesday will choose Mora’s opponent. Prep and Peñasco are on one side of the draw; Pecos and Monte the other.
