Riding the emotional wave of Wednesday’s hard-fought semifinal victory over Taos, the West Las Vegas Lady Dons reclaimed bragging rights in District 2-3A girls’ basketball Friday night, downing Robertson 60-45 at Mike Marr Gym.
Miranda Martinez led all scorers with 23 points, including four in a critical 13-0 West Las Vegas run that transformed a 25-24 nailbiter into a 38-24 spread in the pivotal second quarter.
Robertson had swiped the No. 1 spot in the district standings — and a bye to the final — by virtue of an 11-game win streak that included two 2-3A wins over West. But the Lady Cardinals seemed to have lost their positive momentum after waiting all week for an opponent.
Robertson’s Jamie Allen scored seven of her team-high 21 points in the opening quarter, but Briana Montaño’s perimeter basket closed the period to give West an 11-10 edge.
The backcourt players for both sides dictated action in the second quarter. Eliana Herrera and Kendra Montoya of Robertson battled evenly with Martinez and Montaño from West, and at halftime, the score was 23-22 in favor of the visitors.
After Vanessa Lucero and Allen traded baskets to open the third quarter, the Lady Dons made their decisive run.
Martinez started it by hitting a free throw, then — after a defensive stop — dishing to Maya Roybal for a basket. Lucero hit a fadeaway three-pointer and another shot from just inside the three-point line. Roybal drove the lane for another bucket, a foul shot shy of a three-point play. And Martinez punctuated the run with a three-ball from the left corner.
The surge left West ahead 38-24. Montoya ended the run by scoring on a baseline drive, and Jayme Quintana stole the ball and took it for a layup to cut the margin to 10. It was 40-28 at the end of the third period.
Allen led the Lady Cards back, however, and she scored five points in a 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter. Her old-fashioned three-point play made it 42-38 with 5:31 remaining.
Roybal — the hero in Wednesday’s narrow win over Taos — answered by scoring the next four points. Montaño and Martinez added free throws to provide West with insurance, growing the lead back to double digits.
The two Meadow City rivals have now split four meetings this season. West won the first, a non-district contest in the Capital City Invite, 53-48 on Dec. 10. Robertson swept the regular-season district games — 71-62 on Feb. 9 and 58-50 on Feb. 18.
Unofficial scoring, WLV: Miranda Martinez 23; Briana Montaño 14; Vanessa Lucero 11; Maya Roybal 8; Michelle Tapia 3; Michelle Montaño 1.
RHS: Jamie Allen 21; Kendra Montoya 13; Eliana Herrera 6; Miranda Garcia 2; Jayme Quintana 2; Kassandra Tapia 1.
