West Las Vegas swept the regular-season volleyball series with Robertson, but the Lady Cardinals contented themselves with sweeping the Lady Dons in Saturday night’s District 2-3A tournament final.
The Lady Cards finally got over the hump against their crosstown rivals, scoring a 25-13, 25-20, 25-15 win.
West had looked poised and confident in the teams’ previous meetings, winning 3-0 and 3-1. But the Lady Dons came out flat on Saturday and never recovered.
Game one was tied six times before RHS took off, taking advantage of Lady Don defensive lapses. Blocks by Shannen Lopez and Abby Bradley, Juliana Guerin’s kill, and an ace by Marka Garcia sustained an 11-0 surge for the Lady Cards.
That run turned an 11-11 deadlock into a 22-11 spread, and a few more WLV miscues closed the set in the visitors’ favor.
Vanessa Lucero’s slam opened game two on an up note for West. Megan Martinez also had a kill as the Lady Dons grabbed a 5-1 advantage. But again errors hurt the home team, as did kills by Garcia and Kassandra Tapia.
Lucero and Larrissa Gallegos drilled back-to-back kills to get the Lady Dons back in the game, and WLV led 18-15.
The score was 19-18 WLV before passing or attack errors on five consecutive points shifted control to Robertson. Tapia finished with a kill.
West led 5-2 in game three aided by a couple Larrissa Gallegos kills. Then Robertson rallied with eight straight points, including a pair of aces by Lopez. Kills by Garcia, Tapia, Jeanna Rhoads and Guerin scorched the WLV defense for a 23-8 cushion.
The Lady Dons came back with a 7-1 run, but Bradley closed out match point.
Notes: Also Saturday night, NMHU’s volleyball team came close to its first RMAC win of the season, falling 3-2 at Western State in Gunnison, Colo. Scores: 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 26-28, 15-7.
