Cowgirls’ upset bid falls short

-A A +A

It wasn’t a repeat of the last meeting, but it wasn’t the signature upset they were hoping for, either.

New Mexico Highlands kept things close in a 2-0 loss Sunday to Fort Lewis College, which came into Perkins Stadium as the No. 5 ranked women’s soccer team in NCAA Division II.

The Skyhawks (15-1-1) had vanquished NMHU 6-0 back on Oct. 1 in Durango, Colo. At that time, they were the 11th rated team in the nation.

This time, NMHU keeper Amanda Rose Johnson and the Cowgirl defense limited FLC to one goal a half. The first was Kortney Hull’s header off Therese Romero’s free kick in the 38th minute. Then Hayley Hollenga scored in the 66th, going top shelf on another free kick.

Johnson had four saves.

Highlands (10-5-2) and second-year head coach Justin Wagar host Colorado State-Pueblo at 3 p.m. Friday to close the regular season.
