Mullen: 13 kills vs. UCCS Lions

By Dave Kavanaugh

Snapping a five-match losing skid, the New Mexico Highlands volleyball team scored an emphatic straight-sets win over visiting Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday night at the Wilson Complex.

Each of the games was competitive, but the Cowgirls prevailed 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21 to move to 8-10 overall and 2-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions dropped to 7-9 and 3-5, respectively.

Darian Mullen paced Highlands in kills for the second night in a row, connecting on 13 in 27 attacks and a .370 percentage.

Mullen also had three block assists and three digs.

Alicia Moreno hit .400 and had nine kills to go with eight digs. Jessica Piper and Acacia Ka’a’a led in digs with 16 and 10, respectively.

Tarissa Mellin set up 36 assists and hit three of her team’s four service aces.

Bailey Weidner added seven kills and Jazmine Harge and Daisy Gonzalez had six each.

Highlands and coach Bryan Crawford will hit the road for their next four matches, beginning with a Friday night date with Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D.

With Saturday’s win, the Cowgirls matched the number of RMAC victories they had in 2012. They’ve already exceeded the six overall wins they earned last fall.
