New Mexico Highlands opened the league schedule with three straight wins against the Grizzlies, in their first year of baseball since 1976.
NMHU won 7-4 on Friday, then took a sweep (14-3, 6-5) on Saturday at Brandt Park.
Jordan Goliat went 3 for 4 and Matt Gualco was 1 of 2 with three runs batted in in game one.
Javier Ledford was 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBI, and Kyle Herrington 3 for 3 with three RBI in game two. Braulio Hernandez (1-1) struck out 10 and held Adams State to eight hits over six innings.
Highlands was down 5-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning in Saturday’s nightcap but scored three unanswered to put the game away. Jarred Middleton went 2 of 5 with three RBI, and Oscar Almeida (2-0) picked up the win in relief.
The teams were to conclude the series Sunday.
Cowgirls split in Alamosa
Highlands softball split its first day of action in a two-day round-robin event over the weekend in Alamosa, Colo.
The Cowgirls fell 11-6 to host Adams State despite a 3-for-3 performance by Brittany Potter.
NMHU beat Fort Lewis 7-6 in a second game that required an extra inning following a four-run rally from the Cowgirls. Molly McDougall drove in Shelby Watts for the game-winning run.
