The long-awaited “second season” begins Wednesday for the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (28-22 overall, 24-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).
NMHU is the No. 3 seed in the RMAC tournament and plays No. 4 Regis. Whoever prevails advances to play either No. 2 Colorado State-Pueblo or No. 5 Metro State at 7 p.m. Thursday. The loser plays in a 3:30 p.m. Thursday game against whoever wins the first-rounder between No. 1 Colorado Mesa and No. 6 Colorado School of Mines.
First pitch of the Highlands-Regis first-round game is scheduled to be thrown at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Suplizio Field on the campus of Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo.
The tournament plays out in a double-elimination format until the championship game on Saturday.
The Cowboys are coming off a four-game split at Metro State over the weekend in Denver. On Sunday, they lost 5-4, then won 5-4, against the host Roadrunners.
Colorado State-Pueblo finished strong to leapfrog past NMHU in the RMAC Plains Division as the regular season came to a close.
Regis (26-26, 21-15) won three of its last four, taking a road series win at Colorado Christian. The Rangers’ leading hitters are Nick Billinger (.409, 70 hits, 14 doubles, 43 runs batted in), Steven Brault (.410, 68 hits, 19 doubles, 35 RBI) and Tony Piazza (.418, 59 hits, five home runs, 37 RBI).
The Cowboys won three of four at Regis April 5-7 in Denver. Leaders include Jordan Goliat (.384, 56 hits, 10 doubles, five triples, 43 runs, 29 RBI) and Josh McMahon (.319, 46 hits, three home runs, 31 RBI).
