Highlands outscored host Adams State 24-10 in the second half to break away for a 34-20 win in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football on Saturday afternoon in Alamosa, Colo.
The Cowboys (6-1, 5-0)mustered only 35 yards rushing but more than made up for it with another prolific passing day.
Emmanuel Lewis completed 36 of 67 passes for 437 yards and three touchdowns with one interception to keep NMHU unbeaten in RMAC play and tied with Colorado State-Pueblo for first place.
Cowboy veteran wide receiver Kevon Williams caught 12 passes for 116 yards and one TD. Darius Davis had seven grabs for 129 yards and two scores. And Keondric Reynolds and John Webster had five and four receptions, respectively.
On defense, Jared Koster led with 18 tackles, two for loss. Jordan Campbell recorded 17 stops, including four for loss and two sacks.
The Grizzlies (4-3, 2-3) blocked a punt and returned it for a TD, and David Van Voris’ 22-yard field goal staked the home team to a 10-0 advantage in the first quarter.
Highlands tied it by halftime, getting a 32-yarder from Zach Tapia and a goalline TD from Lavelle Peterson.
The game was deadlocked at 20-20 after Connor Stevens ran back a Cowboy fumble 54 yards with 11:24 left in the fourth.
But Lewis hit Williams for the go-ahead TD with 9:12 left, and he hooked up with Davis for their second score — from the ASU 40 — for insurance with 4:51 remaining.
