The NMHU Cowboys started their 2012-13 campaign on solid note taking down the Griffins of Westminster College by a final score of 89-85 in front of a raucous crowd in the John A. Wilson Complex on Friday night in their first exhibition game of the season.

The Cowboys and the Griffins battled throughout the game, trading the lead throughout the first half. The Pokes went into the halftime break leading 47-45.

In the second half it would be more of the same as the Griffins and the Cowboys continued to battle. The Cowboys pulled away late in the second half, taking a five-point lead and never looking back.

“Tonight we got a great win against a very good and well-coached team,” said NMHU head coach Joe Harge. “We still have a long way to go, but the guys are getting better every day.”

Roland Fitch made a stupendous first-time appearance as a Cowboy with a double-double. Fitch ended the night with 22 points, 12 rebounds, two blocked shots and one assist.

Lavell McDade pitched in with 21 points, four rebounds, four steals and five assists.

Mannie Cass rounded out the top three performers for the ‘Pokes with 18 points, five rebounds and one assist.

The Cowboys were to play their next exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at home against the Warriors of the University of Virginia-Lynchburg.
