No big deal for the big guys.

New Mexico Highlands heavyweight wrestlers Jesse Boggs and Louis Thornton stormed through their brackets in this past Saturday’s Wyoming Cowboy Open, each reaching the finals before falling in close matches.

Boggs, who along with teammate Jesse Feinsod represented NMHU at nationals this past March, went 3-1 in the “elite” heavyweight division. The tournament, hosted by the University of Wyoming in Laramie, featured “elite” and “amateur” brackets at every weight class.

Highlands’ No. 2 heavy, Thornton, also went 3-1, getting to the “amateur” final.

Feinsod posted the best NMHU performance by a non-heavyweight, finishing fourth in the “elite” 174-pound draw.

“It was a good tournament for us,” said NMHU head coach Doug Moses, who noted that he has a full team — with wrestlers at each weight class — as the season begins.
