Las Vegas resident Mike Roybal plans to run for the City Council seat held by his father, Cruz Roybal.

Roybal, a longtime councilman from Ward 4, won’t be running for another term, his son said.

“We want to have the council work together. We need to go in there as professionals and do what is best for the community,” Roybal said.

Roybal, who is self-employed, is the third person to announce a candidacy in the March 2 municipal election. San Miguel County Treasurer Alfonso Ortiz plans to run for mayor, while former Councilman Macario Gonzalez intends to run for his old Ward 1 council seat.

Roybal said he would release his platform later, but he noted that he has some ideas on utility issues.

As for water, he said the community needs to think beyond just one source. He suggested the city look north for water supplies.

On natural gas issues, Roybal recommended that the city find a way to get more companies to provide that service, with the resulting competition leading to lower prices.

His father, Cruz Roybal, said he initially considered not running again four years ago, but decided to do so.

“I have done the best I can. I have enjoyed my stay with the city,” he said.

Roybal said he wants to have more flexibility, so he can visit family in Colorado and California.

Candidates must file their candidacies Jan. 5.
