Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC), a non-profit organization based in Taos, has been awarded a contract through the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority to implement the federal Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program.

Qualified low income homes in Taos, Colfax, Union, Mora, Harding, San Miguel, Guadalupe and Quay counties receive services to improve residential energy efficiency.

The program was introduced in 1976 to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by weatherizing homes. Since its inception, program contractors have weatherized more than 6.4 million homes across the country. RMYC will be providing services to about 80 homes in northeast New Mexico each year.

Homes are weatherized by Rocky Mountain Youth Corps’ AmeriCorps crews, local youth between the ages of 18 and 25.

RMYC, in a unique partnership with the MFA Energy$mart program and Santa Fe Community College provides crew members and staff with training and certifications to improve employability in construction and weatherization fields. In addition to safety and technical training, crew members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award after successful completion of their term of service. This award can be used for tuition and books at most colleges, universities, and trade schools, or pay existing student loan debt.

RMYC is currently accepting applications for the upcoming Energy Efficiency Crew. Anyone between the ages of 18 to 25 with a desire to serve the community, gain certifications to increase employability, are asked to visit RMYC’s website at www.youthcorps.org for a corps member  application.

Homes that are weatherized save up to $500 per year on energy costs, and receive an average of $4500 in upgrades including added insulation, sealing of air leaks, combustion appliance testing, and possible window, storm window, and appliance replacement. All of these upgrades decrease the demand for energy and improve New Mexico’s energy sustainability.

Anyone interested in receiving Weatherization services for your home applications may be found at www.youthcorps.org, or call their office at (575) 751-1420 and an application will be mailed.
