Hometowned?
Perhaps.
Make no mistake about last Saturday night's game hosted by the Highlands University Cowboys against their nemesis, Colorado Mesa at the John A. Wilson complex.
The RMAC game was a buzzer-beater, replete with a technical foul earlier in the game against HU Cowboys coach Joe Harge, and near-fisticuffs by an assistant basketball coach from Colorado Mesa who had to be escorted off the gym floor by HU campus police over the last-second shot.
With 0.0 ticks left in the game, senior guard Billy Austin, a Eastern New Mexico University transfer, hit a 15' jump shot that hit nothing but net, electrifying the partison crowd with a roar not heard in a long, long time.
However, four 'Poke players hit double figures. They were Billy Austin who canned 22 points; Marcus Williams, 17; Momcilo Latinovic, 14; and Mike Moody, 12.
Colorado Mesa was led by Michael Bear, 23 points; Mike Mellilo,15; and Chandler Burgon,10.
While the Cowboys could only manage 60% (15-25) from the charity stripe, the Mavericks kept the game close with 79% (31-40). HU forced 26 turnovers, resulting in 32 points. The 'Pokes defense was outstanding with many steals, blocked shots and old-fashioned hustle.
