City police settle with woman

Officer says he harbors no 'ill will'

By David Giuliani

The city of Las Vegas has settled with a woman who accused a police officer of attacking her while she was in his custody.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bernadette Varela is to receive $31,000, said Tony Ortiz, an attorney with the city’s insurer, the New Mexico Municipal League.

“The city of Las Vegas Police Department did not agree that they had done anything wrong. This was a choice based on economics — to resolve something early rather than let it get more expensive,” Ortiz said.
