With early voting already under way, the city of Las Vegas and San Miguel County appear headed for a showdown over the county’s proposed tax.
The County Commission voted in August to place a measure on the ballot asking voters to approve a one-fourth of 1 percent increase in the sales tax to pay for a centralized emergency communications center and for ambulance and behavioral health services. The tax would cost consumers an additional 25 cents for $100 in purchases and generate an estimated $870,000 a year.
