In June 2011, the Track fire burned thousands of acres near Raton and damaged a block gas valve, forcing Las Vegas’ natural gas supplier to shut down the pipeline that services the city.
Fortunately, the damage was repaired quickly, and the city’s natural gas customers never had to deal with a disruption in their service.
But the incident served as a reminder of the precarious situation the city is in with only one natural gas pipeline coming into the city and no backup if that ever goes off line.
