Cinco de Mayo mariachi concert Sunday at Ilfeld

New Mexico Highlands University presents a Cinco de Mayo Mariachi Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 in Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.
The award-winning Highlands University Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra will perform, along with the professional Mariachi Differencia of Santa Fe and the Don Mariachi del Oeste of West Las Vegas High School.
Benny Lucero began directing the Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra fall semester 2013.
“We are celebrating the Cinco de Mayo holiday with the great sounds of these three mariachi groups,” Lucero said. “Mariachi is very romantic, poetic and beautiful music. We’re looking forward to sharing our crowd-pleasing selection of traditional and contemporary mariachi music.”
Some of the musical selections include Sabor a Mi, La Charreada, En Mi Viejo San Juan, La Hija de Nadie, El Pastor, and No Me Queda Mas.
Highlands students performing in the mariachi concert include:
• Tim Martínez, flute and vocals
• Lisa Cisneros, violin and vocals
• Milena Lujan, violin and vocals
• Rexann Bustamante, trumpet and vocals
• Lorenzo Lujan, trumpet
• James López, guitarrón and vocals
• Rosita Griego-Meza, vihuela and vocals
• Jimmy Sánchez, vihuela
• Ivan Lucero, vihuela
• Jaylene García, guitar and vocals
• Carmen Ortega, guitar
Benny Lucero will also play violin and sing vocals.
The Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra recently recorded the first CD in the group’s history. The No Me Queda Mas 16-song CD is receiving radio playtime and is available at the concert for $15.
Tickets for the mariachi concert are $5. Highlands University students with valid IDs are free.
