New Mexico Highlands University baseball players Jason Carr and David Bustillos have been named to the Daktronics Baseball All-America teams.

Carr, a Mr. Everything for the Cowboys in the 2010 season, was named to the Daktronics All-America First Team and Bustillos received All-American Honorable Mention honors for his efforts in the 2010 season.

The Cowboys finished ranked sixth in NCAA Division II and compiled a final record of 41-13 in the 2010 season. The Cowboys also finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the Central Region and earned the right to host the NCAA Central Regional for the first time in Highlands history.

“This is a great honor for both of these guys,” NMHU head coach Steve Jones said of his latest All-Americans. “They were leaders throughout the season and played big roles for us. They deserve this honor.”

A senior first baseman, Carr finished the season with .449 batting average, 16 doubles, 25 home runs (a new NMHU single-season record) and a .941 slugging percentage.

Carr was named the RMAC Player of the Year as well as first team All-RMAC. Carr was also named to the Daktronics All-Central Region first team and was named the Central Region Player of the Year. He was named to the Rawlings-American Baseball Coaches Association All-Central Region first team as well as the ABCA-Rawlings Central Region Gold Glove second team.

Bustillos finished the season with a .401 batting average, 20 doubles and five home runs. Bustillos also finished with a .971 fielding percentage.

A senior second baseman, Bustillos was named to the All-RMAC first team, the Rawlings-ABCA All-Central Region first team, the Rawlings-ABCA Central Region Gold Glove first team and the Daktronics All-Central Region first team.

The All-American designations are the latest in a host of postseason awards.

Senior outfielder Christian Garcia, who hit .406, scored 75 runs and notched 18 doubles and 80 total hits in the regular season, was recently named to the all-region second team.

Catcher Phillip Rodriguez and designated hitter Brad Morgan were honored as part of the all-regional tournament team.

Jones was named RMAC Coach of the Year, and senior ace Drew Vassil was tabbed as RMAC Pitcher of the Year, leading Highlands’ all-league honorees.
