Turnovers and inaccurate shooting doomed Robertson in a 70-51 defeat to Santa Fe Indian in the Class 3A boys’ quarterfinals Wednesday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
Robertson, which improved from a district also-ran to a 19-10 contender in David Bustos’ second season, figures to have much of its young team back next season.
But on Wednesday, perhaps youthful inexperience hurt the Cardinals — which lost two key guards over the course of the campaign.
Jamal Anderson led the Braves — the No. 3 seed and regular-season champ in District 2-3A — with 20 points. Anderson hit two threes in the second quarter as SFIS grabbed a 35-21 halftime advantage.
Justin Bustos scored 13 for the Cardinals. Fabian Varela, who’d torched Tohatchi for 36 points in the first round, was held to eight. Clint Brayfield and Mike Martinez also put up eight apiece.
Coach Bustos credited a total team effort for its improvement, which included a Stu Clark championship.
