Clutch free-throw shooting helped Robertson’s boys’ basketball team secure a third-place finish in this past weekend’s Taos Tiger Invitational.
The Cardinals held off tournament host Taos 69-63 in the “bronze medal game.”
The Tigers had trimmed Robertson’s lead to 65-63 with 10 seconds to go before RHS as a team made four of five free throws in the closing seconds.
Robertson had trailed by four late in the second half but a Cardinal run gave them control as the fourth quarter wound down. RHS led 34-32 at halftime and 49-43 through three periods.
A close first half saw the lead swing back and forth, ending with the Cardinals up 34-32, and the Tigers came out slow in the third quarter, which ended with Taos down 49-43.
Taos rallied by scoring 12 of the next 14 points to go up by four. But the Redbirds regrouped midway through the period.
RHS (3-1) opened the tournament Thursday by beating Class 2A Springer. In a Friday semifinal, the Cardinals lost to Class 4A Española Valley. The Sundevils moved on to Saturday’s final with Santa Fe Indian School, which like RHS plays out of District 2-3A.
Robertson’s boys are coached by David Bustos, in his second year at the helm.
The team includes seniors Clint Brayfield, R.J. McNellis, Jacob Quintana, Larry Romero; juniors Mike Martinez and Fabian Varela (a WLV transfer); sophomores Dalan Abreu, Antonio Arguello, Josh Brito and Justin Bustos, who leads the team in one of its strengths — outside shooting.
RHS plays in the Sandia Prep Invite this week in Albuquerque.
