No, the Robertson Cardinals still don’t enjoy 100 percent health, and recent forfeits in up to four or five weight classes have limited their point-scoring potential.
But the wrestlers these Redbirds do have available showed some of what they are capable of Friday and Saturday at Mike Marr Gym. With eight varsity men making the medal round — first through fourth place matches — Robertson clinched the team championship of its own Cardinal Classic.
The Cardinals, coached by Richard Martinez, amassed 337 team points to outgun runner-up Aztec. Hobbs, Belen and Roswell rounded out the top five.
Despite bad weather that struck most of New Mexico late in the week and made travel problematic, the tourney still drew teams from 16 out-of-town schools.
For the second tournament in a row after last week’s Manzano tourney, Robertson 152-pounder Daniel Martinez won his class, beating Hobbs’ Tyler Schaunert 9-0. James Gonzalez (119), Johnathan Lucero (140) and Estevan Vigil (171) also made finals, finishing as runners-up.
West Las Vegas (11th place of 22) had three medalists, and Pecos came away with two, including Jonathan Torrez, runner-up at 130.
