SANTA FE — In the end, it came down to avoiding a bruising leadership fight that might have created even more divisions in the state Senate and weakened the Democratic caucus.
So in his classic style, Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, stepped aside on Tuesday and even nominated fellow Democrat Mary Kay Papen of Las Cruces as president pro tem of the Senate, telling his colleagues that he was doing so to ensure the Senate was united and focused on the issues confronting the Legislature.
