The labor of love that is the annual Brian Gallegos Memorial Tournament is taking center stage at Mike Marr Gymnasium this weekend.

Girls’ high school basketball teams including local teams Robertson and West Las Vegas tipped off on Thursday and will play through Saturday in the three-day, eight-team event. They’re playing for a tourney title and the commemorative T-shirts. And they’re playing to honor the memory of Gallegos, who was a local hoops aficionado and official. Each year, the Las Vegas Basketball Officials Association teams up to stage the tournament.

For Robertson and coach Aunna Roanhaus, the event is a season opener. The Lady Cardinals reached the Class 3A semifinals, losing to eventual state runner-up Portales.

West Las Vegas and coach Jose Medina also represented the Meadow City in the 2009 state tournament, falling to Portales in the quarterfinal round.

The Lady Dons opened their season this week by routing Taos 56-30 on the road. Linda Esquibel (13 points), Miranda Martinez (12), Briana Montaño (nine) and Vanessa Lucero (seven) led the team in scoring.
