Santa Fe Indian School has defeated West Las Vegas 56-50 in overtime for the Class 3A girls' state basketball championship; the title game, held Friday night at The Pit, was the second overtime contest in as many days for the Lady Dons and coach Jose Medina, and it was a rematch of the District 2-3A tournament final won by WLV.
The state runner-up finish is the highest ever for a West Las Vegas girls' basketball program that has fielded some strong teams over the years.
The teams were tied 45 all at the end of regulation. But the Lady Braves -- coached by former New Mexico Highlands University head coach Cindy Roybal, a native of the Pecos area -- had a decided edge at the foul line in the extra period and outscored their district rival 11-5.
