A San Miguel County jury found Eric Vigil not guilty this afternoon of murdering Damian Ortiz, 24, and Stephanie Dimas, 25.
Vigil was also found not guilty of robbery, evidence tampering and two counts of conspiracy.
Dimas and Ortiz, who were engaged and enrolled in Highlands University's teacher education program, were found shot to death in their Dora Celeste home just days before Christmas in 2007.
The jury began deliberating at noon today, and by 3:30 p.m., the bailiff began calling people back into Judge Abigail Aragon’s courtroom, announcing that the jury had reached a verdict.
Vigil bowed his head and cried after the verdicts were read. For more on this story, pick up a copy of Wednesday’s Optic.
