Authorities say a customer walked into the Big R store on Mills Avenue and apparently committed suicide this afternoon.
Las Vegas Police investigators were at the scene trying to piece together the events surrounding the apparent suicide. The man who died has been identified as Michael Parson, who was in his mid-50s.
"It appears he walked in, asked to see a gun," Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño said. "He loaded it with his own bullets and then the store personnel tried to take it away from him."
Montaño said a struggle ensued, but Parson ended up with the gun. The worker, fearing for his safety, backed off.
"At that time Michael Parson shot himself in the head," Montaño said. The weapon was identified as a .38 special handgun.
Montaño released the name of the man who died at the store after notifying his family.
The entrance to the store was cordoned off with Yellow police tape and Las Vegas police and Sheriff Benjie Vigil were at the scene, as were paramedics and the crime scene van. A prosecutor and investigator from the district attorney’s office were also there.
Big R Employees, wearing their red vests, were assembled outside the store and appeared stunned. A number of onlookers were at the scene.
