Abbey Bradley swished a game-winning basket to beat the final buzzer on Thursday, leading the Robertson Lady Cardinals to a 50-49 squeaker over Hartley (Texas).
The win came in the first round of a three-day tournament in Clayton and it was the season opener for RHS and head coach Rick Armijo.
Bradley led Robertson with 16 points, and Chantel Sena had 13.
“It was a good win for us,” Armijo said. “(Hartley’s girls) were big. They have a 6-2 girl and a 6-0 girl. It’s not something we see a lot, so it was a good experience for us. We’re kind of small.”
The teams were tied 13-13 after one period. Robertson took a slim 25-23 lead at the break, and it was 37-36 going into the final quarter.
“We had a good all-around game,” Armijo said. “I liked our overall team effort.”
He credited Chaylene Sena and Alicia Arguello with some particularly solid work on defense.
The Lady Cardinals join West Las Vegas in this coming week’s Capital City Invite.
In Santa Rosa, the Mora Rangerettes won their first two games of the Lady Lion Classic to reach Saturday’s final. Mora blew out Estancia 54-24 in Thursday’s first round, then took a 46-40 win over Tularosa on Friday.
Pecos lost to Tularosa on Thursday in a first-round contest.
Other teams participating were host Santa Rosa, Escalante, Peñasco and Española Valley’s junior varsity.
