The body of an unidentified man was discovered in a ravine off Interstate 25 on Thursday, and state police are treating it as a suspicious death.

State police weren’t releasing many details.

Among the details they did release was that police were dispatched to the scene just before 4 p.m. on Thursday. The body was located off I-25 mile post 318, which is near the San Juan/San Jose exit.
Passersby saw at least six police cars at the scene as officers secured what state police Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez told the Optic Thursday evening was a crime scene.

The body was transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque, and an autopsy was conducted on Friday.

In a Friday news release, state police said the identity of the deceased male was unknown.

“This is still an open and ongoing investigation...,” the release states. “This case will receive extensive investigation (headed) by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.”

State police hadn’t released the race, ethnicity or approximate age of the man as of Sunday morning. They wouldn’t say how long they believed the body to have been in the ravine nor would they reveal whether any visible trauma had been found.

They also hadn’t released the cause or manner of death of the man.
