A Villanueva man denied stealing an ATM machine, but a DNA test indicated otherwise, state police said.
Richard Joseph Griego, 23, was arrested last week on charges of burglary, larceny and criminal damage.
In early October, the owner of the Pecos River Campground in the Valley told state police that an ATM machine with several thousands of dollars worth of cash was taken, according to Magistrate Court documents.
Soon after, the machine was found under a bridge at Coruco. Blood was found on the railing just above the machine and the ATM itself.
A delivery truck driver reportedly had seen Griego dumping the equipment, but in an interview, Griego said many people in that area looked like him. He categorically denied that he took the ATM, state police said.
However, the state crime lab said the blood was Griego’s, to a degree of reasonable scientific certainty, reports state.
