Baseball contest just for youngsters

Nearly two dozen local youngsters took part in a weeklong competition testing their baseball skills and putting them on display.

The Las Vegas Recreation Department, in conjunction with the local Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas Train Robbers, sponsored the Hit, Run and Throw contest for boys and girls age 9-12. The contest opened with a qualifying round June 15 at Keyes Park and progressed through two subsequent rounds and finals, all during Train Robbers games at Rodriguez Park. The finals were set for Sunday after this issue went to press.

Competitors included the following: Kellsie Gallegos, Amarie Rodriguez-Vigil, Shawn Saiz-Gomez, Sabian Saiz-Gomez, Jacob Ortiz, Jerry Chavez, Lucius Martinez, Jason Byrer, Derek Montaño, Brandon Montaño, Julianne Lucero, Maddie Griego, Nadine Senior, Destiny Rascon, Sierra Rascon, Miguel Martinez, Elijah Alarcon, Josiah Baca, Joaquin Perea, Devyn Lucero, Zoe Martinez, Kane Burney.

Players were tested for hitting distance, speed in running the bases and throwing accuracy.
