Leroy Barela, who just finished guiding the Pecos High School track and field team to a host of medals at the Class 2A state championship meet, will be picking up an additional whistle this coming school year.
Barela has been hired to take over the school’s girls’ basketball program, the coach said Saturday.
Barela served as a top assistant to basketball programs at Class 3A West Las Vegas for four years. Before that, he coached two years at Valley Middle School.
“It’s been one heck of a roller coaster ride this past week with everything that we were able to accomplish in both boys’ and girls’ track at the 2A state track meet and now with this wonderful opportunity to be able to finally head a basketball program,” Barela said.
“It’s an extremely exciting time for me and my family. I look forward to getting in the gym and starting our summer program. We are returning a strong group of girls starting with next year’s incoming senior, Brittany Gallegos.”
Barela takes over for outgoing coach Benny Gallegos.
